Comedy fundraiser with Judy Gold to benefit our fund!

Many of you asked to arrange for social activities for gay parents and future parents, and even more urgently we all recognize the need to help those among us who cannot afford the high costs of surrogacy and egg donation. On October 1 we should all get babysitters if needed, and come together for this fun community event, and bring as many of our friends along!!
We will have terrific raffle prizes as well: two Broadway tickets (courtesy of BJ Holt), a $100 gift certificate to the Bogota Latin Bistro restaurant (thank you George Constantinou and Farid Ali Lancheros!), and a set that includes a voucher for a free night of baby nursing services and a $100 gift card from Chapman Hill Baby, a baby nursing service and an online baby supplies and toy store.

Extraordinary personal stories to be featured at this year's NY Men Having Babies seminar

Eight annual NY Men Having Babies Surrogacy Seminar and Expo is September 22, 2012

While we build the foundations of the new organization, we are also hard at work to ensure that the September Seminar will be the most successful one so far. We are excited to host several new agencies and clinics as sponsors this year, and will also have a number of community organizations co-sponsoring or exhibiting alongside the service providers.  Furthermore, for the first time this year, the net proceeds of the seminar sponsorships will be dedicated to the surrogacy financial assistance fund we are establishing.

We are also introducing an expanded day-long format that will include breakout sessions (in addition to the panels, catered lunch and exhibit). Over two hours each prospective parent will be able to choose up to six "speed group consults" with the sponsoring agencies and clinics. The sessions will be offered by more than a dozen agencies and clinics, they will be 20 minutes long and take place simultaneously in 4 meeting rooms. See the program tab at the event page (shortcut: www.menhavingbabies.org/ny )for more details (full schedule is expected mid-August), and don’t forget to register early to get updates on the speakers, new sponsors and breakout sessions as they are added.

Meeting April 19 discussed future of the MHB Network as nonprofit.

ORG
On Thursday, April 19, we held a special meeting in NY to discuss the future of our Men Having Babies network. The group of volunteers who participated agreed unanimously on the following agenda:
  • We will start the process of incorporating as a nonprofit organization.
  • We will raise funds through event and website sponsorships + raise funds directly.
  • The funds will first serve to continue to develop our workshops, events and online resources.
  • We will add advocacy to promote greater understanding and acceptance of surrogacy as one of the network’s goals.
  • We will work towards establishing a fund to provide financial assistance to gay men who want to become surrogacy dads!
Read more about the meeting and next steps. And mark your calendars: next meeting to discuss the future of the organization is Wednesday, May 16, 6:30pm in NY (details soon). Read More...

David and Alex, along with their surrogate Jessica, featured in NYT video

On December 12th, 2009, the New York Times posted this video as part of a story on surrogacy called “Building a Baby, with Few Ground Rules” which presented a rather negative and one-sided perspective on surrogacy, particularly when states lack legal protections for those pursuing parenthood. At our December 2009 meeting we discussed the article, and some of the reactions to it. In addition, steps were reviewed that can be taken to minimize such negative events, which are by far the exception rather than the norm. In fact, The NY Times reporter who wrote the piece was a guest at our June 2009 meeting, but the positive stories she witnessed were not mentioned in the article. Instead, the Times posted the beautiful video on their website. Enjoy!
