Panelists include:

Jeremy MacKechnie
Jeremy and David live in Brooklyn and have been together for five years. They attended the MHB conference knowing little about the surrogacy process in 2015 and officially started their journey in June 2016. They quickly matched with their surrogate, Sherie, through Simple Surrogacy and a year later got married. Six months from then in December 2017, they welcomed their daughter, Talulah, into the world. They continue to have a close relationship with Sherie and her family; if all goes according to plan, they'll all be back at Fertility Specialists of Texas this month and with the help of Dr. Goldstein, hope to make a big sister out of Talulah.

David Lat
David and Zach live in New York and have been together since 2009. They attended the Men Having Babies surrogacy seminar and started their first journey not long after getting married in September 2015. Last fall in Colorado, their gestational surrogate, Kelly, gave birth to their son, Harlan. They are getting ready to begin a second journey in the hope of bringing a sibling for Harlan into the world.

Scott Malone
Scott Malone began looking into surrogacy in 2014 and attended a MHB event to learn more. He worked with a gestational surrogate in Connecticut and in November of 2017 he welcomed his daughter Audrey into the world. He kept his surrogacy journey close to home and maintains a good relationship with the gestational surrogate and her family.

Kendra Serauskas
Kendra is a 34 married mother of two boys, ages 14 and 4. She carried boy-girl twins for an amazing same sex couple from Amsterdam in her first surrogacy journey, and is looking forward to getting ready to start her second journey in a few months.

Aretha Sol Lotus
Aretha is a wife and mother of four children ages 10, 7 and 4 yr old twins. She recently completed her first surrogacy journey for a single father that resulted in the birth to a heathy baby girl in June 2018.

A mindful look at surrogacy - Attitudes and Ethics: 5:00-6:00 PM (Auditorium, Floor L2)
In this session we will examine how we feel about surrogacy: the meanings and significance people tend to attribute to surrogacy in their lives, with a special focus on surrogates’ perspective. We will look at questions such as:
  • What are the dominant social perceptions of surrogacy in the U.S. and Canada?
  • How do surrogates understand their experiences?
  • What are the roots for concerns about exploitation and commodification in surrogacy?
  • What are the experiences of children born via surrogacy?
We will present recent research on surrogacy, and evidence from studies about the way surrogacy affects the the welfare of the child, the surrogate, and her family. We will also look at programs meant to encourage a more mindful surrogacy experience, such as MHB's Framework for Ethical Surrogacy.

Speakers / Panelists:
  • Jan Silverman, Ph.D. / CReATe Fertility Centre (Canada).
