A new sitcom about a gay couple having a child through surrogacy, "The New Normal", will be featured on NBC next fall. According to an in depth interview with one of its stars, The New Normal will show "what kind of steps gay couples have to go through in the surrogacy process and how badly you have to want a child to go through all of that and the stress of it and the expense of it; it’s the details that I think a lot of heterosexual couples sort of can take for granted when having kids. We’ll get to show all of that process and how much love it takes to create a family..."
NBC already launched a page for the upcoming show, and a few video clips (trailers and cast interviews): www.nbc.com/the-new-normal/. From the little that is there it is hard to get a good sense of how they will treat the subject.
We hope it will be a fair and respectful depiction of not just the couple but also of the surrogate. In one clip you can see the her stating that she is doing this primarily for the money ($35,000, which is well above what the recommended standard is in the field). However she also seems genuinely interested in helping a gay couple (“a family is a family, and love is love”). Let’s hope this will be better than Hollywood latest treatment of surrogacy in “Baby Mama”…
